[ task ]
Create a photographic series of the Otkel exhibition for the artist’s archive, the catalogue and press publications: conveying the scale of the installations, the author’s idea — a crossing between epochs — and the atmosphere of the exhibition space.
01 / Challenge
The exposition is built on contrast: pale objects — white plinths, wax, wool, bone — in near-total darkness under pinpoint spotlights. An exposure error in either direction destroys the frame: highlights on the glossy wax blow out, while shadows collapse into flat black. Reflective surfaces add another layer of difficulty: wax drips and the chainmail-like metal weave catch every light source.
02 / MOSS Bureau Solution
Shooting from a tripod at long exposures with no flash preserved the exhibition’s original lighting in full. Exposure was set for the highlights and shadow detail recovered from RAW, so the black background stays deep without going flat. The wide shots hold precisely levelled verticals of the concrete columns; macro shots of the textures form a separate layer of the series.

[ Frame Specifics ] — Light as the Language of the Exposition
The halls of Otkel are immersed in darkness: each object exists inside its own pool of light. We neither evened out the lighting nor added our own sources — every frame was built on what the artist had staged. The vessel-torso with the Kazakh ornament was shot frontally, framed by the symmetry of black drapes: the colour and the white embryo relief carry all the light in the frame.

[ Frame Specifics ] — Wool, Wax, Bone and Metal
The meanings of Otkel rest on its materials: natural wool, wax drips, bone, the metal weave of a skull in a classic white frame. The macro shots are made so the texture reads both in a catalogue and in large-format print: glare on the glossy wax was controlled by the shooting angle, the metal’s midtones by exposing for the highlights.

[ Video Specifics ] — Behind the scenes of the exhibition shoot
How the Otkel exposition was photographed: a tripod, long exposures and the original lighting of the darkened halls at Ozge Epic gallery.
Photographic documentation of Otkel, the solo exhibition by Oralbek Kaboke at Ozge Epic gallery in Astana: mixed-media installations of natural wool, wax, bone and metal. The series moves from wide views of the exposition among concrete columns to macro shots of textures, conveying both the scale of the works and the materiality behind the artist’s idea.
The exposition lives in near-total darkness: pinpoint museum lighting pulls the objects out of the black space. The photography keeps this dramaturgy intact — the background stays deeply black yet never flat: concrete columns and drapes remain legible in the shadows, and the highlights on wax and wool hold their detail. A separate layer of the series is devoted to macro shots of the materials, showing the very fabric of the works.
We’ll Photograph Your Exhibition the Way the Artist Intended
An exhibition is temporary — its photographs remain the only archive. MOSS Bureau shoots exhibitions and installations with an architectural approach: strict spatial geometry, the author’s lighting preserved and close attention to the texture of the works — for catalogues, press and the artist’s portfolio.
